Training in the heat: how to stay cool

Why evaporation cools, why Liquid Ice belongs on the band, and how to use it for running, cycling and in the gym.

Heat costs you performance in training long before you notice it. The good news: the oldest cooling trick in the world works in sport too. Evaporation.

Why evaporation cools

Sweat cools because it evaporates and takes heat away from the skin as it goes. Liquid Ice does exactly that, only faster: the liquid of water, alcohol, menthol and camphor evaporates in seconds and feels cold straight away. No battery, no ice, no fridge. The bottle can be warm.

Measured on the soaked bandage (Dermatest GmbH, Münster, 2008): 5.8 °C cooler skin, and it is still cooling after two hours. On a shirt this has not been measured.

On the band

On bare skin, Liquid Ice evaporates almost at once. The effect is strong but short. A band, a bandage or a tight-fitting shirt holds the liquid and releases it slowly. That is why it cools longest there.

Rule of thumb: spray until the fabric is visibly damp. A quick spray on a dry shirt wears off sooner. When it warms up, spray again.

Where it counts in training

Running

Spray your band or shirt before the start. Running gives you airflow, and the more air moves over the fabric, the faster it evaporates.

Cycling

On the bike there is wind to spare. Spray your jersey or band before the ride and top up at the break.

Gym and HYROX

Indoors there is no airflow. Spray a compression shirt or sleeve generously and top up between sets.

What Liquid Ice does not replace

Drinking, shade and breaks stay essential. Liquid Ice is the cooling you wear while you do all that.

A Lamborghini Super Trofeo team cools with it trackside, and in a US Marines field test Liquid Ice wraps scored 9.1 out of 10 for ease of use.
